Young children are treated with great respect and lessons are suited to each individual. Everyone has their own pace and encouragement is given to all. People often ask when to start lessons for a little one. Two good indicators are the ability to count to 20, and knowing the alphabet. But the most important indicator is the child’s interest! If the student does not want lessons, there is no use in forcing it. There must be genuine interest for lessons to be successful.
Many students start out at grade school level and find great enjoyment and creativity in taking lessons. While every age group experiences this, grade school children have enhanced enthusiasm and can learn early good musical habits before bad ones set in. This age is one that students soak up musical information (and all information for that matter) like a sponge. It’s a great starting time.
